West Side Big Pipe Project

The work is part of Portland’s West Side Big Pipe Project to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Willamette River. Work crews are drilling holes and injecting concrete below the Steel Bridge foundations. The hardened soil and concrete stabilizes the ground under the bridge foundations during construction of the West Side Big Pipe.

Clay Street Shaft: Sewer construction periodically closes one lane of traffic on SW Naito Parkway near Market Street, and one lane on SW Harbor Drive. The lanes are adjacent to the Clay Street tunnel shaft, one of four west shafts under construction as part of the West Side Big Pipe project. There will be intermittent lane closures near the site on both Harbor Drive and Naito Parkway until construction is complete in 2006. The closure allows equipment and trucks to move in and out of the construction site. The West Side Big Pipe will be a four mile-long tunnel that will run from Clay Street to Swan Island.

Steel Bridge Shaft

Located at the east end of the Steel Bridge. The tunnel shaft location only directly impacts traffic when moving in heavy equipment and doing concrete pours - which are coordinated with traffic and the Rose Garden activities. The work at the Steel Bridge Shaft begins in Sept 2006 and will be completed in Dec. 2011. Within that time there will be months of inactivity.

Outfall 41 - Diversion Structure

Located on the "peanut" island between the tunnel shaft location and the Rose Garden. One traffic lane will be removed on NE Multnomah between NE Interstate Ave and the pedestrian crossing on the island. The work begins Sept 2006 and is completed Deb 2008. There will be some minor work during 2011 at this site.

Burnside Bridge closure August 9 - 13

The Burnside Bridge will be closed to road and sidewalk traffic from 8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 9 until as late as 5:00 am on Sunday, August 13 to allow a contractor to complete repairs that require the lift span to be in the open position. Flaggers and posted signs will direct bridge users to other routes when the bridge is closed. During the closure TriMet bus routes 12, 19 and 20 will use the Morrison Bridge. The bridge will remain closed Sunday morning, August 13 for Bridge Pedal.

The bridge closure will allow the contractor to reinstall two pairs of original parts from the east leaf of the lift span that were removed in July for repairs. The two pairs of live load shoes help support the bridge deck in the down position and transfer its weight to the bridge piers. Installing the parts may require the use of a barge-mounted crane, which could partially block the river navigation channel on Thursday, August 10. The bridge will need to be in the open position during most of the closure.

A second bridge closure is scheduled for August 18 – 23 to place concrete for the second and final section of the west leaf of the lift span.

The bridge is in the midst of a two-year repair project which will replace the lift span deck and repair or replace parts that open the 80-year old bridge. The project is on schedule to be completed at the end of 2007.

Multnomah County maintains the Burnside Bridge, five other Willamette River bridges, and more than 300 miles of roads.

Hawthorne Bridge to close

The Hawthorne Bridge will be closed to motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm this Sunday, August 27 for annual maintenance activities. During the closure crews will grease the counterweight cables and make adjustments to other cables that help to raise and lower the bridge.

Alternate river crossings include the Burnside, Morrison, Marquam and Ross Island bridges. TriMet bus routes that normally cross the Hawthorne Bridge will be detoured across the Morrison Bridge. The closure will not impact river traffic.

The Hawthorne Bridge is the oldest operating vertical lift bridge in the nation. Multnomah County maintains the Hawthorne Bridge and more than 300 miles of roads and bridges.

WORK ON FREMONT BRIDGE

A contractor working for the Oregon Department of Transportation will close lanes in both directions of Interstate 5 this weekend to inspect and paint a section of the Fremont Bridge. The section of bridge that crews will work on is directly over both directions of I-5 between the I-405/Fremont Bridge off-ramps.

Friday, August 25 the right lane of northbound I-5 will close at 11 p.m. The lane will reopen by 7 a.m. Saturday, August 26

Saturday, August 26 both southbound lanes of I-5 will close at 8 p.m. All southbound traffic on I-5 will be routed over the Fremont Bridge on I-405 south. Motorists headed for eastbound I-84 or the Rose Quarter will follow I-405 south to I-5 north. Both southbound lanes of I-5 will reopen by 10 a.m. Sunday, August 27

Sunday, August 27 the left lane of northbound I-5 will close at 10 p.m. The lane will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, August 28

This work is weather dependent.

Broadway Bridge Closed Sunday Morning

The Broadway Bridge will be closed Sunday, September 17 from 7:00 am until noon during the Race for the Cure and a structural inspection. The closure will impact all traffic lanes and both sidewalks, since the bridge will be in the open position during the inspection. River traffic will not be impacted.

The annual inspection is required to evaluate the performance of the solid lift span deck made of fiber reinforced polymer that was installed in 2004. The deck material is considered experimental. The inspection has been scheduled on a morning when the bridge will be closed for the Race for the Cure, which uses the ramps at the west end of the bridge.

During the closure, TriMet’s 9 Broadway bus route will be rerouted across the Steel Bridge, via the Rose Quarter Transit Center. Alternate river crossings for traffic include the Steel and Fremont bridges.

Multnomah County maintains the Broadway Bridge, five other Willamette River bridges and more than 300 miles of roads.

Burnside Bridge Weekend Closure

The Burnside Bridge will be closed to road traffic from 8:00 pm on Friday, September 22 until as late as 5:00 am on Monday, September 25 to allow a contractor to complete work that requires the lift span to be in the open position. Bridge sidewalks and paths will remain open to pedestrians and bicyclists Friday night. Flaggers and posted signs will direct bridge users to other routes when the bridge is closed. During the closure TriMet bus routes 12, 19 and 20 will use the Morrison Bridge. The work will not impact river traffic.

The closure will allow the contractor to complete test openings of the west leaf of the lift span, which has been rebuilt this year. When the west leaf is back in service, the contractor will begin rebuilding the east leaf of the lift span.

The bridge is in the midst of a two-year $9 million repair project which will replace the lift span deck and repair or replace parts that open the 80-year old bridge. The project is on schedule to be completed at the end of 2007.

Multnomah County maintains the Burnside Bridge, five other Willamette River bridges, and more than 300 miles of roads.
